Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries it became home to diplomats and aristocrats, later serving an important civic role as a WWII hospital for servicemen and, post-war, as the headquarters of the Yorkshire Electricity Board. Its story of continual reinvention, from refined private estate to vital public landmark, gives the site a unique character that continues to shape its identity today.

Scarcroft Lodge has a rich and distinguished heritage, built around 1835–1840 as the elegant country residence of prominent Leeds industrialist, Newman Cash, before being transformed into a grand Victorian estate under influential businessman and politician Robert Tennant (1852).
